Review of ‘Go Sculpt Yoself’ a weekend workshop with Chris Riccardo (9-30 - 10/1):

Riccardo’s portrait sculptures carouse sneers, smirks, and deeply tongue-ful greetings that emerge from the occasional thought he keeps to himself. His self-aware clay characters of dubious report embrace mischief, wearing their history on their face.

At the start of your workshop with Riccardo participants discovered what structure lies beneath their skin reemphasizing the true foundation of the face. Through demonstration and interactive mentorship, they followed along Chris’ process of exaggeration and fleshy formulas.

In a less concrete sense, participants might have found themselves allowed permission to push the boundaries of portrayal and propriety, and may even begin to ask themselves the essential questions of ‘what is too naughty in my own art?’.

Demonstration, mini-lecture, and lots of one-on one guidance were the cornerstones of the workshop. Toward the end, the students watched a a short demo detailing the hollowing process and firing process of one or more solid-built head structure(s). Bisque firing at a later date was included with the course.

Additional time with Chris for oversight in the hollowing process and guidance regarding glazing was also arranged through Omertà Arts, and a later date to underglaze the sculptures is yet to be determined.

For those of you anxious to get a head start, or interested in continuing your artistic endeavors with Chris, he offers a custom-tailored independent mentorship program in-person or online.
Contact TheDons@omertaarts.org to arrange.

Film recording of the workshop is in post-filming-production and will likely be ready to access by early 2024.

Preparation:
Beginners will gain essential anatomical building block knowledge and a crash course in different additive and subtractive carving techniques in sculpture.

Experienced participants will engage nuanced elements that build character in figurative work, freeing them into a looser style without betraying the base anatomy.

Chris STRONGLY suggests throwing away all your tools … joke!, but will show you how to use everyday household items as tools.
No special tools required, feel free to bring along your personal favorites and apron. Standard sculpture armatures will be provided, and clay will be available for purchase on site before class.

Upon request Omertà Arts will arrange shipping of your finished bisque fired piece.

About the Artist

“My sculptures are a direct physical manifestation of my inner thoughts and moral struggles. They are frozen moments in time ripped from the ongoing struggle that takes place in my mind. The battle between good and evil, right and wrong and quite honestly a multitude of both morally and ethically questionable thoughts.”

Chris Riccardo’s decades in the arts industry includes the sketchy likes of Boston University, the hot underbelly of numerous foundries across the country, which led to the even hotter underbellies of numerous arts non-profits and museums that he had the honor of leading.
